Friday, May 17, 2019 was a chance for students (and faculty) to kick back, relax, enjoy some snacks, and watch Ferris Bueller’s Day off in RAHN 1202 all day long on our last day of Student Wellness Week. Everyone was free to wander in and out of the room for however long they liked.
As an added bonus, from 12-1, we had Augie the therapy dog join us! Below, you can see Augie and his high flying antics.
Thanks to EVERYONE who came out for our first annual Student Wellness Week!
We will be doing it again so keep your eyes on our website for updates.
Thursday, May 16th, the OIPE hosted Dr. Jason Mizell, COM Associate Professor for Student Wellness Week.
His focus was on financial security and wellness. He also had questions on cue cards regarding financial issues like savings interest earned or mortgage interest paid.
Dr. Jason Mizell discusses financial wellness during student wellness week.
As part of the day, everyone was encouraged to write on the Wall of Financial Freedom.
Some truly wonderful tips were shared.
Wednesday, May 15th was Physical Fitness day during the OIPE Student Wellness Week.
The UAMS Fitness center members were on hand to talk about the concept of mind and body wellness.
Angela Johnson led a Body Weight Based Training class in RAHN 1202 while Adam Carter, director of the Fitness Center, manned the information table and offered students a one week free trial in the center on the 8th floor of the RAHN building.
The Get Healthy UAMS program is a terrific endeavor that the OIPE is thrilled to help support.
Everyone was also encouraged to write on “King Julien’s Wall of Physically! Physically! Physically Fit!!”
Tuesday, May 14th, the OIPE sponsored a Culinary Medicine demonstration with the help of UAMS Nutrition Services director Tonya Johnson!
Students and faculty were treated to a delicious, heart-healthy, vegetarian meal that aligns with the DASH Diet and Mediterranean Diet.
Using brown rice, which is a whole grain, tempeh, and fresh vegetables seasoned with garlic, onion, and other spices, the chefs cooked up a tempeh fried rice that had people lined up in the lobby!
Everyone was also encouraged to check out the Wall of Yum! and leave a little healthy tip or trick for others to see:
It was a great day on the 1st floor of the RAHN Building (Bruce Commons).
Thanks to everyone who stopped by!
Monday, May 13, 2019 the OIPE hosted a gratitude and emotional wellness day from 12-1 pm on the 1st floor of the RAHN Building as part of Student Wellness Week (May 13-17)
Dr. Erick Messias, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs was on hand to discuss the importance of these topics to students, and faculty alike.
Part of Dr. Messias’s idea was the “Wall of Gratitude” where anyone could drop by and write down something they were grateful, or thankful for.
SPOT therapy Dog, Augie, getting scritches.
SPOT therapy dog, Scully, was adored by everyone! One final opportunity for the day was a Mindfulness Session being offered by Angie Moore, Licensed Certified Social Worker in RAHN G220 from 12-1.
The first day of Student Wellness Week was certainly a hit and the OIPE is looking forward to more exciting days ahead.
