IPE Office Awards Small Grants to Promote Collaborative Practice

The Office of Interprofessional Education recently awarded small grants to interdisciplinary projects aimed at improving oral health, use of telemedicine and promoting use of mobile or wearable technologies for clinical and research uses.

The three grants totaling $30,536 constituted the second round of awards from the Interprofessional Education Small Grant Program that was created to promote interprofessional education and collaborative practice at UAMS. The call for submissions in fall 2017 targeted proposals focused on interprofessional collaboration and practice in areas of clinical care.

A panel that included the provost, the two IPE directors, the chair of the IPE Research Subcommittee and additional faculty members representing the UAMS Integrated Clinical Enterprise (ICE) reviewed the submissions. The grants were announced in March.

The grant awards (and principal investigators) include:

“Development of an Interprofessional Geriatric Telemedicine Clinic to Improve Rural Health of Older Adults in Arkansas,” PI: Priya Mendiratta, M.D., M.P.H. ($14,700)

“Interprofessional Education to Guide the Meaningful Use and Secure Adoption of Mobile Health and Wearable Technologies for Clinical and Research Applications,” Co-PIs: Anita Walden, Thomas Kim, M.D. ($8,961)

“An Interprofessional Intervention for Oral Health Among Institutionalized Adults,” PI: Melissa Efurd, Ed.D., Co-PIs: Joel Goodin, Ph.D., Kristin Chaffee, M.D. ($6,875)

“Interest in the small grant program continues to grow, and we received many strong proposals in this round,” said Kathryn Neill, Pharm.D., director of interprofessional administrative and curricular affairs in the Office of Interprofessional Education. “We look forward to seeing the impact of these exciting projects.”

“For the second iteration of the grant program we requested proposals focused on the collaborative clinical practice element of interprofessional teamwork,” said Wendy Ward, Ph.D., director of interprofessional faculty development. “We hope to alternate that focus with a call for proposals concentrated on research of interprofessional education projects in subsequent offerings.”

The Office of Interprofessional Education is planning another call for submissions later this year.
