Description:
Each year in Arkansas over 21,000 children fail their school eye screening and of those 2/3 do not receive follow up care. This year ROOTS, Rural Ophthalmology Optometry Treatment & Screening Non-profit is trying to make a positive difference by gathering volunteers to screen children before the school year starts at a 3,000 backpack giveaway event! Please watch this instructional video to prepare for your time volunteering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMwy06mAV5U
Many volunteers will be assessing visual acuity, some will help schedule appointments and arrange follow up. Those children who pass their eye screening (20/20 both eyes) will be given a green wristband. Those who have room for improvement in their vision (20/25-20/40), but it will not affect their quality of life significantly will be given a yellow wristband and referred to local ophthalmology or optometry clinics. Those who are found to have serious vision deficits (>20/40) will be given a red wristband and will be seen through the Shepherd’s Hope Volunteer Eye Clinic.
Parking for the event is provided at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service. If you have any questions you can reach out to me at 734-612-0850.
